7th Charlie Johnston Memorial Ride
My brother was killed September 23rd. He was mentally handicapped but was able to function in our everyday life. Charlie was on his way home one evening from the Fillmore Fire Department after helping them clean up after their Chicken Barbeque weekend. A car pulled in front of him and hit him head on. Killing him instantly. Charlie was loved by everyone in our community. There was not a woman in Putnam County that he didn’t ask to marry him. He didn’t know a stranger. Charlie would stand on our square, at the Moose or Wal-Mart and talk to everyone. He had many friends. He loved going to the Putnamville Races to watch Paul Bumgardner race!
Each year we choose a different charity to ride for. We have rode for the Susan G. Koleman cancer group, Indiana Burn Camp, Madd (as we lost our son to a drunk driver at the age of 17), and last year we rode for the Greencastle Police Department to help purchase a new K-9 dog. This year we are riding for The Fillmore Fire Department to help them buy fire gear that they need. 100% of the proceeds go to the charities we ride for. We will have the Indiana Blood Center there for anyone who would like to donate blood. The Fillmore Fire Department serves breakfast starting at 8:00 am for an “at will” donation.
We also have a car and bike show. There will be plaques given to all cars that participate and license plates given for The Best Classic, The Best Bike and The Best Custom Car. Lunch is served when we return from the ride. We will have plenty of door prizes for everyone and we have a great silent auction after the ride.
Festivities usually wrap up by 3:30-4:00.
Hope to see you there.
